Process Am I guaranteed a job?
The program is designed to match all successful participants with good and well-paid jobs. The program will continue to ensure that it partners with as many employers as possible to achieve this goal. However, we cannot guarantee that all participants will find employment.
Industry Are there actually well-paid jobs in the accommodations industry?
There are thousands of well-paid opportunities in the tourism sector and they cover a broad range of occupations across five industries (accommodations, food & beverage services, transportation, recreation & entertainment, and travel services). Specifically focusing on accommodations, there are facilities maintenance positions (HVAC/engineering), kitchen positions from prep cook to executive chef, as well as numerous opportunities from housekeeping and front desk to event management and general manager roles. Within a given property, staff can access cross-training and become familiar with all operational positions as preparation for a supervisory or management position.
Process How long will it take to get hired?
Multiple factors will determine the time it takes for an individual newcomer to be employed through Destination Employment. Each newcomer will have a unique mix of skills, language proficiency, and work experience (in Canada or in another country). This is a pilot project; current expectations range from 6 to 17 weeks before being employed.
Eligibility I am already employed; can I apply?
Yes, if you can meet the training schedule requirements.
Eligibility I am an employer; am I eligible?
We are looking for employers that demonstrate:
- leadership committed to good human resource practices;
- a positive work environment, including support for diversity and inclusion;
- ongoing support and dedicated resources for professional development of staff;
- a strong system and process for communications within the workplace; and
- an interest in being an early participant in a new pilot program, with a willingness to monitor activities and provide input and reports to help shape the program.
If you align with these, then you are very likely eligible.
Eligibility I am not looking for full-time employment; can I apply?
Yes. The goal of this pilot program is to match the needs of job seekers and employers in the sector.
Eligibility I am participating in another program; can I participate in this one as well?
As per the funding agreement between Tourism HR Canada and the Government of Canada, there are no restrictions on the number of programs a participant can access when participating in the Destination Employment program. However, be sure to check with the other programs, as they might have restrictions.
